How to make the sign of the cross correctly

The Sign of the Cross is one of the first gestures an Orthodox Christian learns—and yet many perform it unconsciously or incorrectly in everyday life. Yet it is one of the most important acts of faith: a visible confession of faith in Christ, a brief prayer with the hand, and a request for God's protection.

The cross is the most important symbol of Christianity. For the ancient Jews, it was a symbol of shame and mockery. Therefore, they crucified the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross to humiliate Him as deeply as possible. But through the crucifixion of the God-man Christ, the cross was transformed: It became a symbol of salvation for all humanity—salvation through suffering, eternal life through sacrifice in earthly life.

The Lord Jesus Christ said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Therefore, the cross is simultaneously a sign of pain and suffering, but also a sign of joy, life, salvation and resurrection.

The 6 most common mistakes when making the sign of the cross

  1. Incorrect finger position
The thumb, index, and middle fingers are not correctly placed together. The correct position is: These three fingers are placed together, straight and symbolizing the triune God. The ring and little fingers are placed in the palm of the hand, symbolizing the two natures of Christ—divine and human.

  2. Incorrect sequence of movements
The Sign of the Cross follows a fixed order: forehead – chest – right shoulder – left shoulder. Some begin at the stomach or go directly to the shoulder.

  3. Ignorance of the meaning
Many people make the sign of the cross automatically, without considering its meaning. But it is a conscious prayer and an expression of faith, not just a habit.

  4. Too hasty and superficial
The Sign of the Cross is often made quickly and carelessly. The correct way to do it is to do it calmly, clearly, and with inner composure.

  5. Incomplete movement
Sometimes parts are omitted, such as the shoulders. The correct sign is a full cross over the forehead, chest, and both shoulders.

  6. Failure to observe the liturgical order
In the liturgy, the sign of the cross is particularly used when the Holy Trinity is mentioned (e.g. “The blessed Kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” ) or when the Mother of God is mentioned.

The sign of the cross accompanies Orthodox Christians in all situations: upon entering church, before prayer, upon leaving home, or before a journey. It connects the head, heart, and body with God and reminds us that Christ is always with us.

Anyone who makes the sign of the cross consciously, slowly and in the correct form strengthens their faith and asks for God's blessing in a simple way.
