The Easter Liturgy in the Serbian Orthodox Church

The celebration of Christ's resurrection, called Vaskrs in Serbian, is the most important and joyous service of the entire church year in the Serbian Orthodox Church. The Paschal Liturgy forms the climax of Great Lent and the entire Holy Week. It is traditionally celebrated on the night of Holy Saturday to Easter Sunday and is characterized by solemn hymns, processions, prayers, and the proclamation of Christ's resurrection.

For Orthodox Christians, the resurrection of Christ is at the center of their faith. In the Paschal Liturgy, this central truth of Christianity is celebrated in a particularly impressive way. The Church proclaims that Christ conquered death through his death and opened eternal life to humanity.

Preparation for the Paschal Liturgy

The path to the Paschal Liturgy begins many weeks earlier with Great Lent, which is a time of spiritual preparation. During these weeks, the faithful try to prepare for the Feast of the Resurrection through prayer, fasting, repentance, and reconciliation.

Holy Week forms the last and most intense part of this preparation. During these days, the faithful remember the last events in the life of Jesus Christ: the Last Supper, the suffering of Christ, his crucifixion on Good Friday, and his burial.

On Holy Saturday, a quiet and expectant atmosphere initially prevails in the churches. The faithful gather in the evening to prepare for the night of the Resurrection. Many bring candles, which are lit during the service.

The Midnight Celebration and the Procession

Shortly before midnight, the solemn part of the Paschal Liturgy begins. In many churches, a service is first held to commemorate the tomb of Christ. The church is often dimly lit, symbolizing the tomb and the silence before the Resurrection.

Shortly before midnight, priests, deacons, and the faithful gather for a solemn procession. With icons, crosses, and church banners, they process around the church. During this procession, resurrection hymns are sung and prayers are offered.

This procession symbolically recalls the women who went to the tomb of Christ early in the morning and there received the message of the Resurrection.

The Proclamation of the Resurrection

At midnight, the resurrection of Christ is solemnly proclaimed. At this moment, the bells ring, and the priest, together with the choir, sings the well-known Paschal hymn of the Orthodox Church:

Hristos vaskrse iz mrtvih, smrću smrt razruši i onima u grobovima život darova.

This troparion is one of the most important liturgical chants of the Orthodox Church and is sung repeatedly throughout the entire Paschal season. It expresses the central message of Easter: Christ is risen and has conquered death through his death.

After this proclamation, the faithful greet each other with the traditional Easter greeting:

Hristos vaskrse
Vaistinu vaskrse

This greeting is used throughout the entire Paschal season and constantly reminds the faithful of the joy of Christ's resurrection.

The Divine Liturgy

After the proclamation of the Resurrection, the actual Divine Liturgy begins, usually according to the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom. It is the central service of the Orthodox Church.

During the Liturgy, readings from Holy Scripture are recited, including texts from the Gospel that speak of Christ's resurrection. The choir sings resurrection hymns, and the congregation actively participates in the service.

The climax of the Liturgy is the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. Many faithful have prepared for this moment through confession, prayer, and fasting, and receive the Holy Gifts during the Paschal Liturgy.

Participation in the Eucharist is understood in the Orthodox Church as an expression of the deepest communion with Christ.

Joy and Fellowship after the Liturgy

After the end of the Paschal Liturgy, the faithful often go home with lit candles. These candles symbolize the light of Christ's resurrection, which is carried into people's lives.

In many families, the communal Easter celebration then begins. After the long fast, families and friends gather for a festive meal. Traditionally, the previously dyed eggs are eaten, and the well-known Easter egg game is played, in which two people tap their eggs against each other.

However, the Paschal Liturgy remains the most important moment of the entire feast. It reminds the faithful that the resurrection of Christ is not just a historical event, but a living hope for all Christians.

The Spiritual Significance of the Paschal Liturgy

For the Serbian Orthodox Church, the resurrection of Christ is the focal point of the Christian faith and the entire history of salvation. The Paschal Liturgy expresses this truth in a particularly solemn way.

It connects the faithful with the centuries-old liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church and reminds them that Christ, through his resurrection, overcame death and granted life to humanity.

Therefore, the Paschal Liturgy is considered the most joyous and solemn service of the entire year.
