Explanation of the types of fasting in the calendar
This fasting calendar shows the Orthodox fasting rules for each day of the month. The color coding and terminology in the calendar help to clearly and correctly classify the permitted forms of fasting.
abstention
A very strict form of fasting. Abstaining from food and drink. This form is generally only practiced for spiritual reasons and after consultation.
Dry fasting
Strict fasting with dry, uncooked food without oil, for example bread, fruit or vegetables.
Water
Strict fasting without oil and without fish. Plant-based foods are permitted, cooked or raw, but without oil.
oil
A fast in which oil is permitted. Wine may also be allowed, but fish is not.
Fish
Fasting in which oil, wine and fish are allowed.
Meat-free
A form of fasting in which all foods are allowed, except meat.
The calendar serves as a guide in daily life and is intended to help people observe fasting consciously, correctly, and in accordance with the tradition of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The focus is not only on outward abstinence, but above all on the inner attitude of prayer, reflection, and spiritual vigilance.
