Decorating Slava bread is a deeply rooted tradition in Serbian Orthodox families. Each decoration carries the symbolism of blessing, fertility, faith, and community. Below, we provide a proven recipe and detailed instructions for making white decorations for Slava bread, as passed down through generations.

Recipe for decorative dough

Ingredients:

  • 140 g all-purpose flour
  • 50 g cornstarch
  • 100 ml water
  • teaspoon of salt (to keep decorations white)

Preparation:

  1. Mix all dry ingredients.
  2. Gradually add water.
  3. First combine with a mixer, then knead by hand until smooth.
  4. The dough should have a firm texture, like playdough.
  5. Roll out the dough to a maximum thickness of 3 mm.
  6. Sprinkle both sides of the dough with flour to prevent sticking.

Tip:
If the dough is too soft, add a little more flour and knead again.

Let the dough rest for 2–3 minutes before shaping.

If wrapped in foil or a bag and stored in the refrigerator, it can be used the next day.

Making decorations

  1. Press the mold (only the stamp, without the frame) into the floured dough.
  2. Carefully place the mold frame around the already embossed motif.
  3. Gently press the frame with your fingers to separate the decoration.
  4. Do not press too hard so as not to damage the shape.

If the dough is properly prepared, the decoration will separate easily.

Placing decorations on the Slava bread

  1. Mix 1 teaspoon of flour with a little water (yogurt consistency).
  2. Brush the back of the decoration with a soft brush.
  3. Place the decorations on the already baked, preferably still warm bread.
  4. Return the bread to the oven at 200°C for 7–10 minutes.

Important:
Never coat the decoration with oil.

Mold maintenance

The molds are made of biodegradable plastic and do not tolerate high temperatures.

  • Wash by hand, in cold or lukewarm water
  • Use soft sponges
  • Never wash in the dishwasher
