Last Week of Orthodox Lent: How Alms, Forgiveness, and Humility Change Your Heart
Share
The Serbian Orthodox Lent is more than just abstaining from certain foods. It is a journey of the soul—toward God, to inner purification, and to the resurrection of the heart. Especially in the last week of Lent , before the beginning of Holy Week, the Church calls us not only to abstain from meat and milk—but also from pride, indifference, and lack of love.
Three spiritual works are at the center of this period:
Alms, forgiveness and humility.
They bring fasting to life – in the family, in the community and in one’s own heart.
Giving alms: Orthodox help – concrete and anonymous
The Church reminds us: Give without being seen.
In the Serbian Orthodox tradition, giving alms is a sacred act – especially during Lent.
An example of living charity is the organization Svi za Kosmet.
It supports Serbian families, children, monasteries and those in need in Kosovo and Metohija – with food, clothing, school supplies and spiritual support.
If you want to help in a concrete way, this is the right way.
Living forgiveness: Healing begins in the heart
Without forgiveness, fasting remains empty. Christ calls us to first make peace with our brothers and sisters—only then approach the altar.
The last week before Holy Week is the ideal moment:
Write a message
Please forgive me
Forgive in your heart – even if the other person never knows
Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is the first step toward inner resurrection.
Practicing humility: The silent fasting of the soul
Humility is not shown in external rules, but in the heart.
She doesn't judge. She doesn't compare. She doesn't seek applause.
Just as Christ entered Jerusalem on a donkey – not with power, but with gentleness – we too should enter the final part of Lent.
Humility is the door to grace.
