Transfiguration of the Lord – when heaven and earth transform
Share
On August 19, the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates Preobraženje Gospodnje (the Transfiguration of the Lord) – one of the twelve Great Feasts of Orthodoxy. It is a day when, according to popular belief, not only does heaven open, but all of nature is transformed. For Serbian families at home and in the diaspora, this holiday is one of the deepest and most beautiful of the church year.
The Event on Mount Tabor
In the third year of his ministry, Isus Hristos (Jesus Christ) led the Apostles Petar, Jakov, and Jovan up Mount Tabor to pray. During the prayer, his face was transformed and shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as snow. For the first time, his divine nature was visibly revealed to people.
Beside him appeared the prophets Mojsije (Moses) with the tablets of the law and Ilija (Elijah) – the law and the prophets bearing witness to the Redeemer. From the open heaven, the voice of God the Father resounded: "This is my beloved Son – listen to him." Therefore, Preobraženje is also called the "summer Bogojavljenje (Theophany)" in Orthodoxy.
Christ already knew that his suffering was imminent. He took his closest disciples up the mountain so that they would witness his glory before experiencing his suffering on Golgotha – and instructed them to keep the secret until the Resurrection. The Transfiguration is therefore not merely a memory: it is the promise that beyond the cross stands light.

Date and Position in the Church Calendar
Preobraženje is a fixed feast and falls every year on August 19 according to the new (civil) calendar, which corresponds to August 6 according to the Julian calendar. In the calendar, the day is marked with a red letter (crveno slovo) – it is one of the obligatory holidays on which no work is done.
Gospojinski post (Dormition Fast) – and the Exception with Fish
Preobraženje always falls during the Gospojinski post (the fast before Velika Gospojina). This fast is one of the strictest of the year – but on the feast day itself, fish is allowed on the table. Therefore, the festive fast table with fish and wine is a firm tradition in many families on this day.
The Blessing of Grapes – the Most Beautiful Custom of the Feast
At the end of the liturgy, grapes are blessed in the churches and distributed to the faithful – as an act of gratitude to God for the fruits of the earth. In areas without grapes, other fruits are blessed. Grapes are specifically blessed because wine, which symbolizes the blood of Christ, is made from them.
According to old Serbian custom, grapes are only eaten from Preobraženje onwards – and many believers also bring them to the cemetery as an offering for the repose of the souls of the departed. The first grape of this day is therefore more than just fruit: it is gratitude that can be tasted.
Folk Customs: "Preobražava se list u gori i kamen u vodi"
Among the people, the saying "Na Preobraženje se preobražava list u gori i kamen u vodi" (On Preobraženje, the leaf in the forest and the stone in the water are transformed) is common: the leaves begin to yellow, the water gets colder – summer is coming to an end. Therefore, on this day, people traditionally take their last swim in rivers and lakes.
The Night when the Božja vrata (God's Gates) Open
A particularly beautiful folk belief surrounds the night before the feast: on the eve of Preobraženje, the Božja vrata (God's gates) open in heaven. Whoever looks at the sky on this night and experiences the moment when heaven opens, may make a wish – and the wish, it is said, will come true. Old traditions even state that the sky transforms three times at midnight.
This is also narodno verovanje (folk belief) and not a doctrine of the Church – but it shows how deeply this feast is rooted in the hearts of the people: as a night when heaven is very close to earth.
As beautiful as these folk traditions are – the core of the feast lies deeper: in the revelation of Christ's glory and in the call to every person for inner transformation. Preobraženje asks us anew each year: What can be transformed within me?
Preobraženje in the Diaspora
Especially far from home, this day becomes an anchor. Going to the liturgy, the blessed grapes on the table, the icon in the household shrine – small actions that carry the faith of the grandparents into one's own home in Zurich, Vienna, or Chicago. Explaining to children why grapes are on the table today is passing on more than a custom: a piece of identity.
An icon of Preobraženje shows Christ in white robes, surrounded by light, with Mojsije and Ilija – and below them the three apostles. It is one of the most theologically profound representations in iconography and deserves a worthy place in an Orthodox home.
