The Serbian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, which is why some holidays take place on different days than the Gregorian calendar. March marks the beginning of Great Lent, which prepares for the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ. This month is marked by numerous martyr and saint commemoration days as well as important church festivals.
Lent in March
Lent is the most important period of preparation for Easter and lasts a total of seven weeks. This year it begins on March 3, 2025 according to the new calendar. The Sundays of Lent are particularly important, each of which is dedicated to a special theme:
First Sunday of Great Lent (Sunday of Orthodoxy) – March 9, 2025
Second Sunday of Lent – March 16, 2025
Third Sunday of Lent (Veneration of the Cross Sunday) – March 23, 2025
Fourth Sunday of Lent – March 30, 2025
In addition to these Sundays, there are numerous memorial days of saints and martyrs.

The Meaning of the Month of March in the Orthodox Faith
March is one of the most important spiritual periods of the year for Orthodox Christians. The beginning of Great Lent marks the beginning of a period of purification, prayer and penance. During this time, believers abstain from certain foods and focus on spiritual values in preparation for Easter.
