Saint Stephen – The First Martyr

Saint Stephen, the first martyr of the Christian Church, occupies a special place in the Serbian Orthodox tradition. His life, his witness, and his death symbolize unwavering faith in Christ and the willingness to profess the truth of the Gospel even under the greatest adversity.

Who was Sveti Stefan?

St. Stephen was one of the first seven deacons appointed by the apostles to serve the growing Christian community in Jerusalem. He was distinguished by his wisdom, faith, and spiritual strength. In the Acts of the Apostles, he is described as a man filled with the Holy Spirit who spoke with great clarity about Christ and led many to faith.

His open testimony, however, also brought him opposition. Before the Sanhedrin, he defended the Christian faith with great spiritual depth and reminded the people how God had spoken through the prophets – and how these prophets were repeatedly persecuted.

The Martyrdom of Saint Stephen

Saint Stephen was the first Christian to be killed for his faith. He died by stoning while praying for and forgiving his tormentors. In his final moments, he saw heaven open and Christ standing at the right hand of God – an image that holds profound meaning in Orthodox theology: direct communion with Christ as the reward for faithful faith.

This martyrdom makes St. Stephen the archetype of all martyrs who gave their lives for Christ.

Saint Stephen in the Serbian Orthodox Church

Saint Stephen is especially venerated in the Serbian Orthodox Church. His feast day is celebrated on January 9th according to the new calendar, and on December 27th according to the old calendar. Many Serbian Orthodox families have Saint Stephen as their patron saint, which underscores his great spiritual significance among the people.

For families who celebrate Sveti Stefan as Slava, this day represents steadfastness in faith, humility and forgiveness – values ​​that remain central to Serbian Orthodox life to this day.
