Velika Gospojina: The Day the Theotokos Fell Asleep
Share
On August 28, the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates the Uspenje Presvete Bogorodice (Dormition of the All-Holy Theotokos) – popularly known as Velika Gospojina. It is one of the twelve greatest holidays in Christianity, one of the five major Theotokos holidays in the church calendar, and also the last major holiday of the church year, which begins anew on September 1. According to the Julian calendar, the feast falls on August 15; according to the new calendar, it is on August 28.
Although the day commemorates the earthly death of the Theotokos, Velika Gospojina is not a day of mourning – but a celebration of hope. The word "uspenje" means peaceful dormition. It tells us: death is not the end, but the transition into eternity.
What Tradition Tells Us
Holy Scripture does not report on the end of the Theotokos' life. What we know has been preserved by the Church since the first centuries in the Predanje (Tradition): After the crucifixion and resurrection of her Son, the Theotokos lived in Jerusalem, in the house of the Apostle Saint John the Theologian, to whom Christ had entrusted her from the cross.
As she grew older, she often prayed to soon return to her Son. Then Archangel Gabriel appeared to her – the same one who had once announced the birth of the Savior to her – and told her that she would fall asleep in three days. Her last wish was to see all the Apostles again. The wish was granted: the Apostles gathered around her bed, and the Theotokos gave up her soul into the hands of her Son, without pain and without fear.
The Apostles carried her body to the Garden of Gethsemane and laid it in the tomb of Saints Joachim and Anna, her parents. When the Apostle Thomas – who arrived later – had the tomb opened to bid farewell, it was empty. The Church has since preserved the belief that the Theotokos was taken body and soul into heaven.
The Icon of the Dormition
The scene of the Dormition is one of the most important motifs in Orthodox iconography. The icon shows the Theotokos on her deathbed, surrounded by the Apostles – and behind her stands Christ Himself. In His arms, He holds a small figure wrapped in white cloths: the soul of His Mother, depicted as a newborn child.
The image reverses the Christmas icon: there the Mother held the Child – here the Son holds the Mother. Hardly any depiction summarizes the Christian belief in eternal life so clearly. In Serbian monasteries, the Dormition is traditionally painted on the west wall of the church; one of the most beautiful depictions can be found in the Žiča Monastery, founded by the Nemanjići in the 13th century.
Gospojinski post – The Fast Before the Feast
The feast is preceded by the Gospojinski post (also Uspenski post): two weeks, from August 14 to August 27. It is short but strict – stricter than most other fasts of the year. Many believers consciously use these two weeks for preparation: prayer, confession, and Pričešće (Communion) on the feast day itself.
Velika Gospojina is a crveno slovo (red letter) in the church calendar – a major holiday on which believers attend liturgy, light candles, and pray for health, family peace, and blessings.
Customs in the Serbian People
Over centuries, customs have formed around Velika Gospojina that are still alive today:
The Theotokos is considered the protectress of women, mothers, and children. Therefore, on this day, women, in particular, go to liturgy and Pričešće. Traditionally, no work is done in the house – no sewing, no washing, no embroidery. The day belongs to prayer and family.
Bosiljak (basil) plays a special role: according to popular belief, some basil is added to food on this day so that the Theotokos protects the house. In many places, medicinal herbs and fruits are gathered – it is believed that they have special power during this time. The sick were formerly led to springs, as the Theotokos is also considered an intercessor for the sick.
The period between Velika Gospojina (August 28) and Mala Gospojina (September 21, Birth of the Theotokos) is popularly called Međudnevnice – a transitional period in which special thanks are given to the Theotokos.
In Serbia, large vašari (folk festivals) and church consecrations take place on Velika Gospojina – one of the most famous at the Rakovica Women's Monastery in Belgrade. Countless churches and monasteries celebrate their Slava on this day, and Despot Stefan Lazarević dedicated Belgrade to the Presveta Bogorodica in the 15th century.
Velika Gospojina as Krsna Slava
For many Serbian families, Velika Gospojina is the Krsna Slava – one of the most widespread. Wherever a family lives – in Serbia, Switzerland, Germany, America, or Australia – on this day, the candle burns before the icon of the Theotokos, the house fills with the scent of tamjan (frankincense), and the family gathers at the table.
Especially in the diaspora, Slava is more than tradition: it is the thread that connects us to our ancestors, our church, and our homeland. The Theotokos, who was a mother herself, understands the heart of every family – and that is why this day feels like home everywhere in the world.
Celebrating Velika Gospojina at Home
Those who celebrate Slava or wish to commemorate the holiday at home do not need much: an icon of the Theotokos, a candle, tamjan, and a silent prayer. In our shop, you will find icons of the Theotokos – including Bogorodica Kazan, Bogorodica Vladimir, and Bogorodica Jerusalem – as well as everything for Slava: candles, tamjan, and Brojanice.
