Vidovdan – The Day of Remembrance, Faith and Eternity
Share
Vidovdan (Vidovdan), June 28 according to the Gregorian calendar (June 15 according to the Julian calendar), is one of the most significant and emotionally profound days in Serbian Orthodox faith and history. It is the day on which we remember the Battle of Kosovo Polje in 1389—an event indelibly etched in the consciousness of the Serbian people.
On this day, Prince Lazar (Sveti Knez Lazar), along with countless Serbian heroes, sacrificed his life in the fight against the Ottoman Empire to defend his faith, homeland, and honor. Prince Lazar consciously chose the "Heavenly Kingdom"—he gave his life for Christ, for the Church, and for the freedom of his people. Therefore, he is venerated in our Church as a martyr and saint.
Vidovdan is much more than a historical date. It is a symbol of the unwavering will of the Serbs to stand up for justice, freedom, and faith – even at the cost of the greatest sacrifice. The Kosovo Oath lives on in every generation: "Zemajsko ye za malena tsarstvo, a Nebesko uvek i dovek" – The earthly kingdom is only for a short time, but the heavenly one is forever and ever.
Today, more than six centuries later, Vidovdan is also a day of responsibility. A responsibility to preserve our faith, our culture, and our roots. And a responsibility to help those who persevere today in Kosovo and Metohija—in the villages, monasteries, and towns of our ancestors.
That's why Svetazvezda wholeheartedly supports Svi za Kosmet's fundraising campaign for Vidovdan. Svi za Kosmet tirelessly stands by our brothers and sisters in Kosovo and Metohija, bringing aid to where it's urgently needed and maintaining vital connections to our sacred land. With every purchase of our special Vidovdan products or a direct donation, you too contribute to keeping this effort possible.
Vidovdan is a day that unites us Serbs – in Serbia, in Kosovo and Metohija, and everywhere in the world where Serbian hearts beat. It is a day on which we acknowledge our history and, at the same time, look to the future with hope.
On this day, Svetazvezda stands firmly alongside all those who preserve the faith and culture of our fathers. May Vidovdan always give us strength – for the sake of the world and for the sake of the world!
