Miracles of Saint Vasilije Ostroški: Faith, Help, and Living Testimonies
Share
Saint Vasilije Ostroški is among the most venerated miracle workers of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Since his blessed death, believers from all parts of the Orthodox world have reported receiving help in times of illness, despair, and seemingly hopeless situations. The Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro, in particular, remains a place of vibrant hope, attracting countless pilgrims each year to pray and seek solace.
Among the many surviving testimonies, the story of Jovan Šibrak stands out in particular. It impressively demonstrates how deeply spiritual conversion, lived charity, and trust in the intercession of the saints are intertwined.

The examination of Jovan Šibrak
Jovan Šibrak was a wealthy and respected man from the Sanjak of Novi Pazar. He led a devout life and was known in his village for his honesty and charity. After a long, childless marriage, God blessed him with a son named Milenko, who grew up to the great joy of the family.
But just as the boy reached marriageable age, he was struck by a serious, mysterious illness. He suffered no visible pain, but he steadily declined in health and lost his strength. His parents sought help from doctors, healers, and priests, but nothing brought improvement. Finally, Jovan himself made a pilgrimage to the Ostrog Monastery and prayed to Saint Vasilije Ostroški, but at first, this too seemed to have no effect.
During this time of deepest need, Jovan met an unknown priest one evening who asked him a crucial question: whether he gave to the poor in a way that he himself felt the impact of, or only from his own abundance. This question struck him to the core. The stranger advised him to henceforth secretly and selflessly help the needy and to tell no one about it. At the same time, his sick son should be taken outside and strengthened with milk and honey.
Jovan followed this advice wholeheartedly. He began to give quietly and discreetly, consciously forgoing his own wealth. Over time, something happened that the family had almost given up hope of. Their son began to recover, slowly at first, then more and more noticeably, until he finally made a full recovery.
A year later, the same priest appeared to Jovan in a dream, wearing radiant robes and revealing himself as Saint Vasilije Ostroški. For Jovan, this made it clear that divine help often works through conversion of heart and active love.

More miraculous healings
The chronicles of Ostrog Monastery recount numerous similar events. Particularly striking is the testimony of a man whose father lived in caves for seven years in a state of mental derangement. After relatives brought him bound to Ostrog and the monks recited prayers over him, he awoke the next day completely healthy and lived for many more years without relapse.
There are also numerous reports of physical healings. A man from Dalmatia, who was working in North America, suffered from a serious ailment of his right hand that doctors could not cure. After praying before the shrine of Saint Vasilije Ostroški in his homeland, his hand was healed. Out of gratitude, he later had a hand made of precious metal and presented it to the monastery.
Particularly moving is the testimony of a thirteen-year-old deaf-mute girl from Foča. After repeated prayers before the shrine, she suddenly began to speak clearly, which caused great shock and gratitude among the pilgrims present. Similarly, there is a story of a paralyzed student who, after praying in the Ostrog Manor, was able to put down his crutches and continue walking independently.
The records also mention mental suffering. A young woman who was severely mentally confused and insulted those around her became completely calm and healthy after visiting Ostrog and later even asked for forgiveness for her past behavior.
Its enduring significance for believers today
These accounts are understood in the Serbian Orthodox tradition not as mere narratives, but as testimonies of living faith. They remind us that God's help is often at work where people come to Him with humility, repentance, and trust. Saint Vasilije Ostroški is still venerated today as a powerful intercessor, especially in times of illness, family hardship, and inner despair.
For many Orthodox Christians in the diaspora, Ostrog Monastery remains a spiritual center, even if they cannot make a personal pilgrimage there. Prayer to Saint Vasilije Ostroški, trust in his intercession, and a life of active charity continue to be seen as a path of hope.
