The Krsna Slava (family patron saint day) is the only inheritance passed from father to son that can neither be sold, consumed, nor mortgaged. It is the heart of the Serbian Orthodox faith and a tradition that no other people has preserved in this form. This book is its monument: it compiles the life stories of 121 saints celebrated as Krsna Slava in Serbian families – from Sveti Nikola and Sveti Jovan to Sveti Đorđe, Sveti Arhangel Mihailo, and Sveta Petka, all the way to the less frequently celebrated saints whose names few know today. Over 100 icons and frescoes from Serbian churches and monasteries accompany the texts.
The work answers questions that eventually arise at the table in every Serbian family: Why has the Slava been preserved only among Serbs and to whom do we owe this? In which century did it take its current form? Which Slavas are celebrated most often, which least often, and how many families celebrate which saint? Which Slava did Serbian ruling families celebrate, why do some families change their Slava, and why do most Slavas fall in late autumn and winter, from Sveti Toma (October 19) to Sveti Trifun (February 14)? In addition, practical information: What is essential for the Slava table, in which room and on which wall does the Slava icon hang, how many days is it celebrated, and what symbolism do the dough decorations on the Slavski kolač (Slava bread) carry? Large format, printed in Cyrillic, with a richly decorated hardcover binding in eco-leather.
A book for the place of honor in the living room, to be placed on the table on Slava day next to the Slavski kolač, Sveća (candle), and icon, and which the children will one day carry on. A gift for Slava, for a wedding, for moving into a new home, or for families in the diaspora who do not want to forget their roots.
