Svetazvezda Icon Saint Nikolaj Velimirović

This icon depicts Sveti Nikolaj Velimirović, Bishop of Ohrid and Žiča and one of the most significant saints of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the 20th century. Among the Serbian people he is called Sveti Nikolaj Srpski. As a preacher, theologian and author of works such as Molitve na jezeru (Prayers by the Lake) and the Ohridski prolog (Prologue from Ohrid), he has shaped the faith of countless people – to this day.

During the Second World War he was imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp and yet remained faithful to Christ and his people. He died in 1956 in the USA; his relics rest today in the Lelić Monastery near Valjevo. In 2003 he was canonized by the Serbian Orthodox Church. In the icon he appears in episcopal vestments with cross and Gospel, as a sign of his service to the Word of God.
