Saint Demetrius

Saint Demetrius (Sveti Dimitrije) is one of the great martyrs of the Orthodox Church and is venerated as the protector of Thessaloniki (Solun). As a young officer during times of persecution, he openly professed his faith in Christ and gave his life for it. The faithful honor him as a courageous defender of the faith and a powerful intercessor, who for centuries has been invoked as the patron saint of warriors and families.

His feast day, Mitrovdan, is celebrated on November 8th and is one of the most widely observed Slava days among the Serbian people. Families who honor Saint Demetrius as their patron saint celebrate this day with slavski kolač, a candle, and prayer, passing the tradition down from generation to generation.
