Beli Anđeo, the White Angel, is one of the most famous depictions in Serbian Orthodox art. The motif comes from the Mileševa Monastery and is part of the famous fresco of the Myrrh-bearing Women at the Tomb of Christ. The angel sits at the empty tomb and points to the place where Christ had lain. Thus, the depiction proclaims the resurrection of Christ and recalls the victory of life over death.
The Beli Anđeo holds special significance for Serbian Orthodox tradition and is considered one of the most important works of medieval Serbian fresco art. Its calm gaze and bright form convey peace, hope, and the message of the resurrection.
