Beli Anđeo

Beli Anđeo (White Angel) is one of the best-known images of Serbian church art. The fresco was created in the 13th century in Manastir Mileševa (Mileševa Monastery) and shows the angel at the empty tomb of Christ, proclaiming the Resurrection to the myrrh-bearing women. With a calm gaze he points to the tomb – an image of hope and of the victory of life over death.

Over the centuries, the Beli Anđeo has become a symbol of Serbian faith and culture. In many families he has a firm place in the home, alongside the icons and the kandilo, and accompanies especially the season of Vaskrs (Easter).
